The Foundation of Modern Mobile Filmmaking

Modern content creation spans a wide range of setups, from lightweight smartphone builds to fully equipped production rigs with external storage, monitors, and professional accessories. No matter the scale, two things remain constant: stable rigging and reliable power.

In collaboration with Core SWX, we explored how professional power solutions integrate seamlessly with Beastgrip rigging systems to support today’s flexible workflows. The video introduces the concepts, while this article breaks down the practical power and rigging solutions creators can build using these systems.

Compact Power fo r Mobile Creators: Core SWX Mighty

SNAP™ Mighty USB-C PD

For smartphone-based setups, portability and simplicity matter. That’s where the Core SWX SNAP™ Mighty USB-C PD stands out.

The SNAP™ Mighty delivers professional-grade power in a compact 45Wh form factor that is lightweight, travel-friendly, and designed specifically for modern mobile creators. Built for run-and-gun productions, it allows you to power smartphones, media hubs, SSDs, and accessories without adding unnecessary bulk to your rig.

Each SNAP™ Mighty USB-C PD kit includes the Snap-QRL lightweight mounting plate and a USB-C cable, making it a ready-to-use solution straight out of the box. The integrated magnetic mounting system allows the battery to snap securely onto the Snap-QRL plate, which attaches via a standard ¼”-20 mount to the bottom of a Beastgrip rig. This creates a clean, low-profile power solution that keeps mobile builds compact and balanced.

In addition to the mounting plate, the battery itself features a built-in ¼”-20 threaded mount. This makes it extremely versatile, allowing you to attach a quick-release plate directly to the battery. When mounted at the bottom of the rig, you can connect the entire setup straight to a tripod without needing additional brackets or accessories. This small detail makes a big difference for creators who frequently switch between handheld and tripod shooting.

The Mighty is also designed for continuous production. Thanks to its SmartStack magnetic system, multiple batteries can be stacked and hot-swapped without shutting down your rig, ensuring uninterrupted operation during longer shoots.

Power output is highly flexible. The SNAP™ Mighty features USB-C Power Delivery for smartphones, hubs, and accessories, along with dual P-Tap outputs and dedicated 8V and 12V barrel outputs for expanded compatibility. This allows a single compact battery to power multiple devices at once.

A wraparound LED runtime gauge provides instant visibility on remaining power from virtually any angle, helping you stay aware of battery levels during active shooting.

SNAP™ Mighty for Blackmagic Camera ProDock

For iPhone-based rigs using the Blackmagic Camera ProDock, the SNAP™ Mighty-i package adds even more integration. It includes a P-Tap to locking DC cable, allowing secure and reliable power delivery to the ProDock while still supporting USB-C PD for the phone and other accessories. Like the standard Mighty, it supports stacking, hot-swapping, and full compatibility within the Core SWX SNAP ecosystem.

Because of this modular design, Mighty integrates seamlessly with Beastclamp, Beastcage for iPhone, and Beastgrip Pro setups. With the Snap-QRL plate mounted directly to the rig and the built-in ¼”-20 thread enabling direct tripod mounting, phones can be powered cleanly and efficiently while dramatically extending runtime.

For creators who move fast and shoot often, SNAP™ Mighty provides a compact, scalable, and professional power foundation built specifically for mobile filmmaking.

Why Media Hubs Matter in Modern Smartphone Setups

As smartphone cameras become more powerful, creators often move beyond internal storage and built-in microphones. With the iPhone 17 Pro series supporting advanced formats like ProRes and ProRes RAW recording directly to external drives, mobile filmmaking now requires more robust data and power management. Recording to external SSDs at high bitrates demands stable connectivity and continuous power, no matter the setup.

This is where USB-C media hubs become essential.

Even in minimal builds, hubs play a critical role. External SSD recording allows higher bitrates and longer recording times, professional audio accessories can be connected for improved sound, and monitors or other peripherals can be added when needed. A hub transforms a smartphone into a true production tool.

However, hubs and SSDs constantly draw power, and high-bitrate formats like ProRes or ProRes RAW increase power consumption even further. Relying solely on a phone’s internal battery is rarely practical for serious production. A dedicated external power source is necessary to maintain stable operation and extended runtime.

Pairing a Core SWX Mighty battery with a USB-C hub solves this problem. The phone stays charged, the hub receives consistent power, and SSDs and accessories run reliably during extended shooting sessions. Instead of draining the phone, the entire setup operates from a stable external power source.

From a rigging standpoint, Beastgrip systems are designed to support these workflows cleanly and securely. All Beastgrip rigs include cold shoe mounting points where USB media hubs, such as the Kondor Blue USB-C hub, can be attached directly. Optional handles with integrated cold shoe mounts can be added to the Beastgrip Pro, Beastcage for iPhone, or Universal Beastclamp, offering multiple mounting positions depending on layout preference.

Some hubs on the market feature MagSafe mounting systems. In those cases, Beastgrip’s magnetic mounting solution for MagSafe accessories can be used to attach compatible hubs securely to any of our rigs.

With the hub mounted and accessories integrated, the Mighty battery can be positioned at the bottom of the rig using the Snap-QRL plate. This keeps the center of gravity low, improves balance, and creates a compact, fully powered mobile filmmaking setup built to handle modern recording demands.

Integrating Professional Accessories: Blackmagic Camera ProDock

For creators who want to push mobile filmmaking further into professional production territory, the Blackmagic Camera ProDock expands what an iPhone-based rig can do.

Designed to leverage the full power of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, the ProDock connects via USB-C and unlocks a range of professional interfaces. It provides BNC genlock and timecode connections for keeping shots in sync, multiple USB-C ports for storage or lens control accessories, HDMI output for monitoring, and 3.5mm inputs for microphones or headphones. When paired with the Blackmagic Camera app for iPhone, users gain access to advanced production features such as ProRes and ProRes RAW recording, genlock support, and deeper manual control.

At the same time, the ProDock isn’t limited to complex production workflows. For creators who simply need expanded connectivity, external storage, monitoring, and professional audio, it works seamlessly with third-party apps as well — including apps like Beastcam — making it flexible for both advanced and straightforward shooting setups.

From a rigging perspective, the integration is clean and practical. The ProDock includes a ¼”-20 mount that allows it to attach directly to the bottom of a Beastgrip rig. The Snap-QRL plate for the Core SWX Mighty then mounts to the bottom of the ProDock using another ¼”-20 connection, with the Mighty battery attaching magnetically underneath. This creates a vertically stacked configuration that remains compact, balanced, and easy to manage.

In simpler builds, powering the ProDock with a Core SWX SNAP™ Mighty-i using a locking DC cable ensures secure and uninterrupted power delivery. The result is a streamlined mobile configuration that supports professional accessories without adding unnecessary complexity.

As setups scale, the same ProDock transitions naturally into more advanced builds with additional monitoring, storage, and power distribution. It demonstrates how professional production tools can integrate into mobile rigs cleanly.

Scaling Power for Larger and More Demanding Builds

With the latest iPhone 17 Pro series supporting advanced formats like ProRes and ProRes RAW, and with tools such as the Blackmagic Camera ProDock expanding professional connectivity, iPhone-based systems are now capable of operating within serious production environments.

When combined with optical solutions like the Beastgrip DOF Adapter or Photon adapter, the iPhone becomes part of a modular production platform used in films, commercials, and live broadcast workflows. At this level, rigging stability and power architecture are just as important as camera features.

As more accessories are added — external monitors, advanced media hubs, lens control systems, audio equipment, or wireless transmission, power demands increase quickly. The goal is not simply adding a larger battery, but designing a system that can adapt.

Some productions may require a centralized approach, where a single high-capacity battery powers the entire setup. A Core SWX XCell V-mount battery can serve as that primary source, delivering regulated output to the iPhone, ProDock, monitor, and additional accessories through multiple ports.

Other configurations benefit from distributed power. A SNAP™ Mighty or Mighty-i can power the iPhone and Blackmagic Camera ProDock directly, while an XCell battery powers the monitor. In more demanding setups, XCell may handle both monitoring and lens control motors, leaving Mighty dedicated to the core camera system.

This separation improves efficiency and stability while also introducing redundancy. Batteries can be swapped independently without shutting down the entire rig. Power can be allocated strategically based on load and priority.

Beastmod enables secure integration of V-mount battery plates and professional accessories directly onto the rig, allowing optimal balance and clean cable management even as configurations grow more complex.

Because Core SWX batteries share industry-standard mounting and output compatibility, creators are not locked into one configuration. A single V-mount source can power everything. Multiple batteries can be distributed across the rig. Compact stacking solutions like Mighty can work alongside full-size XCell batteries. The system adapts to the shoot rather than forcing a fixed setup.

This flexibility is what makes modern iPhone-based production viable at a professional level. Beastgrip provides the structural and optical foundation. Core SWX provides scalable, configurable power solutions.

One Ecosystem, Endless Configurations

The strength of combining Beastgrip and Core SWX lies in compatibility and scalability.

Beastgrip delivers robust, modular rigging designed to accept industry-standard gear. Core SWX provides professional power solutions that scale from compact mobile builds to full production configurations.

Creators can begin with a simple smartphone setup, then expand to external storage, professional audio, monitoring, optics, and advanced accessories — all without rebuilding their platform. Power can remain lightweight and portable, or expand into distributed V-mount solutions depending on the demands of the production.

This approach reflects real-world workflows where flexibility, reliability, and future-proofing matter most.
