The short film ‘O2’, directed by Stanislav Kapralov and produced by Evotime Films, is a groundbreaking project, being the first to be filmed entirely on an iPhone using professional PL anamorphic lenses. This innovative achievement was made possible by the newly developed Beastgrip DOF Adapter Фoton, invented by Vadym Chalenko, in combination with Atlas Mercury Anamorphic Lenses. The collaboration showcases how smartphone technology, when paired with professional optics, can deliver cinematic-quality visuals, offering filmmakers an accessible yet powerful toolset for high-end production.

Professional-Grade Mobile Filmmaking

What sets ‘O2’ apart is its ability to showcase the potential of mobile filmmaking at a professional level. By combining the iPhone camera with professional optics like Atlas Mercury anamorphic lenses, which deliver cinematic character, bokeh, and flares, and helps to expand the iPhone's capabilities. It demonstrates how filmmakers on a budget can achieve high-quality results without compromising on production value.

iPhone Camera Rig

To ensure seamless on-set operations, the iPhone was configured like a traditional cinema camera using professional equipment provided by Old Fast Glass. Power and an external SSD were connected via USB-C, while a Teradek transmitted the video signal to monitors for the director and 1st AC via HDMI. A wireless follow focus was mounted on the lens and powered by a Gold Mount battery, which also supplied power to the iPhone. The rig was built around the Beastcage with custom modifications (more info coming soon), including an active cooling module for reliable performance. Extended 15mm rods supported additional components like a battery, matte box, and grips, resulting in a well-balanced setup for easier handling with the Easyrig system.

Beastgrip DOF Adapter Фoton [ foh-ton ]

The Beastgrip DOF Adapter Фoton is a groundbreaking new adapter designed for iPhones, delivering superior image quality compared to traditional DOF adapters based on ground glass. By allowing professional PL lenses to be mounted on a smartphone, the Фoton provides unmatched details, eliminating the grain and artifacts typically associated with ground glass systems. It enhances mobile filmmaking by offering greater depth of field control and opens up more creative possibilities with a wide variety of professional lenses that bring unique character, enabling cinematic-quality content to be captured directly on a smartphone.
